This isn’t just a sculpture. It’s a working model of an ancient astronomical instrument. The Armillary Sphere maps the positions of celestial objects. It assigns coordinates to the celestial sphere.
Over two thousand years ago early astronomers used these spheres. They described the exact location of any point in the sky. This particular sphere is a modern interpretation of that ancient design.
The Armillary Sphere features interlocking rings. These rings include the Meridian, Equatorial, Declination, and Small Carrier. All but the Meridian ring can rotate freely. This allows for precise measurements. The Meridian ring aligns due north-south. It is rotated to match Santa Fe’s latitude.
The St. John’s College Class of 2004 commissioned this Armillary Sphere. The class wanted to connect art and learning. The sphere cost over $100,000.
David Harber, a British craftsman, designed and manufactured the sphere. He drew inspiration from sixteenth-century astronomer Tycho Brahe. Harber collaborated with faculty and British scholars for over ten years. They used Brahe’s drawings. This resulted in the only operational equatorial armillary sphere of such accuracy in the world.
Brahe’s measurements enabled Newton and Kepler to transform our understanding of the universe. This sphere stands over eight feet tall. It is made from marine-grade stainless steel. Its mechanisms are generally locked to protect its alignment.
St. John’s College incorporates the Armillary Sphere into its curriculum. Students learn how to use it. They explore the history of astronomy. The college also schedules demonstrations for outside groups.
