Nestled in the heart of Tampa, Mission Church, formerly known as Santa Maria Mission, has a unique story to tell. It’s a story of recognizing a need and bringing the church to the people. Mission Church began in 2001. Father Bob Morris, pastor of St. Mary Catholic Church, saw the growing Hispanic immigrant population in North Tampa, an area nicknamed “Suitcase City”. He realized many couldn’t reach a Catholic church due to economic and transportation limitations. His solution? Bring the church to them. The first service of Santa Maria Mission was held on December 23, 2001. Initially, services were held outdoors, rain or shine. Eventually, services moved to St. Mary’s family center. They continued there while awaiting the construction of a dedicated temple. At times, these services drew over 400 attendees. The mission quickly expanded to provide more than just spiritual guidance. Santa Maria Mission partnered with local organizations like the Sheriff’s Department and Catholic Charities. They offered health screenings, vaccinations, school supplies, and holiday baskets. They provided aid to those earning less than minimum wage. This included donations of food, clothing, and other essentials. Land for a permanent structure was donated on North 15th Street and 142nd Avenue. While a multi-purpose building was planned, even the initial small shed and portable toilet served as a hub for donations and aid distribution. This aid extended to anyone in need, regardless of their background. The growth of the mission led to an expansion of staff at St. Mary’s. This included a Parish Nurse and a Mission Coordinator. Mission Church embodies the spirit of community and service. It’s a reminder that even small acts of kindness can make a world of difference.
