Gazing up at MacPherson Stadium, imagine the roar of the crowd. It’s 1983. The Asian Basketball Championship is in full swing. MacPherson Stadium, nestled in the bustling Mong Kok district, isn’t just a modern sports complex. It’s a phoenix, risen from the ashes of its predecessor. This reincarnation, opened in 2013, boasts a vibrant 1,900-seat arena. The seats, a kaleidoscope of red, blue, yellow, and green, surround a massive screen. This modern MacPherson Stadium hosts everything from sports to concerts and even Chinese opera. But the story begins much earlier. In the early 20th century, John Livingstone McPherson, a Canadian missionary, dedicated himself to Hong Kong’s youth. He helped establish the Children’s Playgrounds Association. His legacy is etched in the very name of this stadium. The original MacPherson Stadium opened in 1953. Sir Alexander Grantham, the then Governor, inaugurated the building. The Duchess of Kent laid the foundation stone. For decades, it served as a vital hub for youth recreation. It witnessed countless sporting events, shaping the dreams of young athletes. By 2008, the old stadium had seen its final game. It was demolished to make way for a residential complex and the new MacPherson Stadium we see today. Part of the MacPherson Place complex, the new stadium shares space with MacPherson Residence and a youth centre. The complex, a collaboration between Kowloon Development and the Hong Kong Playground Association, also houses 293 apartments. The echoes of the past resonate within these walls. The spirit of McPherson’s dedication to youth lives on in this vibrant space.
