Encircled by the mysteries of the Karst plateau, lies the ancient village of Gropada. Gropada whispers tales of a time long past. A document from 1150 mentions Gropada as a place where the noble Bonomo family cultivated their vineyards. This confirms Gropada’s long history, stretching back centuries. Gropada was first definitively inhabited in 1278. It was initially under the control of the Bishop of Trieste. Later, Gropada became a feudal holding of the Counts of Gorizia. The heart of Gropada is the small church of San Rocco. It was likely built in the 17th century, possibly even earlier. Records show a restoration in 1780. Gropada experienced a population boom in the 19th century. This growth led to the construction of new homes. The population peaked at 445 inhabitants in 1936. The village has around 300 inhabitants today. Gropada is known for its Slovenian heritage. The 1911 Austrian census recorded almost all residents as Slovenian speakers. A more somber chapter in Gropada’s history unfolded in 1945 during the brief Yugoslav occupation. Gropada became a scene of the Foibe massacres. This dark period left an indelible mark on the village’s history. Beyond its history, Gropada holds another fascinating aspect. The area around Gropada is a haven for speleologists. Its Karst landscape is riddled with caves. These “abissi,” or abysses, are not only natural formations. They are potentially connected to the underground course of the Timavo River. North of Gropada lies a restored karstic pond. It once served as a vital water source and watering hole for livestock. Today, it teems with life once again. Since 2008, Gropada has hosted the “Senza Confine” orienteering race. This cross-border event, traversing the woods between Italy and Slovenia, holds symbolic weight. It signifies overcoming a past marked by conflict and division. Gropada has become known for orienteering. In 2011, a permanent orienteering course opened. It encourages people to experience this sport.
