Meilenstein der Zeit Stele

One hundred years. Could you imagine a century passing, reshaping the very landscape around you? Here at the Meilenstein der Zeit, the “Milestone of Time,” we mark just such a transformation. This stele, more than just a stone, stands as a testament to Würzburg’s evolution. Erected in 1965 by the Verschönerungsverein Würzburg e.V., the Meilenstein der Zeit commemorates the 100th anniversary of the city’s fortifications being dismantled. The Meilenstein der Zeit isn’t just about dates etched in stone. It tells a story of how the fields, meadows, and vineyards that once lay outside the city walls became the bustling neighborhoods we see today. Karl Schneider, the sculptor, chose Muschelkalk, a local shell limestone, to craft this over two-meter-tall monument. Notice the detailed carving on the broad side: a vine-dresser, surrounded by his grapevines. These vines symbolically continue around the narrower side, a visual representation of Würzburg’s growth. The inscription beneath the vine-dresser reads “MEILENSTEIN DER ZEIT / WEINGARTENSTRASSE / ERRICHTET 1965 EIN JAHRHUNDERT NACH DER ENTFESTIGUNG WÜRZBURGS VOM VERSCHÖNERUNGSVEREIN”. Translated, it means, “Milestone of Time / Weingartenstrasse / Erected 1965 a century after the dismantling of Würzburg’s fortifications by the Beautification Association”. On the side, another inscription reads, “DIE WEINGÄRTEN WEIT VOR DER STADT SIND SELBER STADT GEWORDEN”, meaning “The vineyards far from the city have become the city itself.” The Meilenstein der Zeit stands as a powerful reminder. It shows us how quickly time passes and how dramatically landscapes can change. It whispers a tale of Würzburg’s growth and its connection to the land and its people.
