Established in 1914 as a prison farm Emu Plains Correctional Centre has a rich history. Initially housing male inmates it focused on rehabilitation through agricultural work. The centre transformed in 1957 becoming the Emu Plains Training Centre. Further renovations in 1976 and 1994 led to its current form a minimum-security facility for women.

Emu Plains Correctional Centre wasn’t just about confinement. It played a unique role in community support. Inmates worked in a dairy processing milk products. For a time they even bred and trained assistance dogs for people with disabilities. This demonstrates a commitment to societal benefit alongside rehabilitation. The centre also ran a work-release program.

A truly remarkable initiative started in 1996 a women’s and children’s program. This allowed inmates to maintain close contact with their children. Some children could live with their mothers. The program also enabled inmates to record book readings for their children. This innovative program underscores the centre’s commitment to family bonds. Even during incarceration.

Today Emu Plains Correctional Centre stands as a testament to evolving correctional philosophies. Its transformation from a male prison farm to a minimum-security women’s facility showcases a significant shift in approaches to incarceration. The centre’s history reflects both the challenges and progress in rehabilitation and community integration. It is currently temporarily closed. But its unique past remains a part of the correctional landscape of New South Wales.
