In 2001, a seed of hope was planted in the heart of Anacostia. That seed was the Thurgood Marshall Academy. This wasn’t just any school. It was founded by law students and professors from Georgetown University Law Center. They envisioned a place where students could not only excel academically but also learn to advocate for themselves and their community, much like the school’s namesake, Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall. Thurgood Marshall Academy is a public charter high school, open to all DC students. It’s situated right here in historic Anacostia, in Ward 8. The academy stands as a beacon of opportunity, particularly for students from Wards 7 and 8. These areas often face significant challenges with poverty and limited resources. Thurgood Marshall Academy focuses on a college-preparatory curriculum. Interestingly, the school weaves elements of law and justice throughout its courses. The goal isn’t to turn every student into a lawyer. Instead, it aims to equip them with critical thinking, problem-solving, and persuasive advocacy skills. These skills are invaluable, not just for college, but for life. Now, here’s something you might not expect. The average ninth-grader arrives at Thurgood Marshall Academy three or four grade levels behind. This isn’t a deterrent. It’s a challenge the academy embraces. They provide double the amount of English and math instruction compared to traditional schools, dedicating 90 minutes per day to each subject. This intensive approach helps students overcome academic deficits and build a solid foundation. Thurgood Marshall Academy also has a unique program called Portfolio Presentations. Every year, students present a formal assessment of their academic work, behavior, and community service to a panel of faculty and staff. It’s a powerful way for them to reflect on their progress and articulate their goals. The academy’s efforts have yielded impressive results. For several years, its students achieved some of the highest scores on DC standardized tests among open enrollment high schools. Their average SAT scores surpass those of African American students in the District. Their Advanced Placement passing rate is notably higher than the overall average for DC public and charter schools. But perhaps the most remarkable achievement is this: For seven consecutive years, 100% of Thurgood Marshall Academy graduates have been accepted to college. The vast majority enroll within a year of graduation, and a significant number go on to earn their degrees. Thurgood Marshall Academy isn’t just a school. It’s a testament to the transformative power of education, opportunity, and a belief in the potential of every student.
