“A school with a 50-year story,” the tour guide began, gesturing towards the Instituto João Ramalho. The Instituto João Ramalho stands here as a testament to the power of education and community. Its history is deeply woven into the fabric of São Bernardo do Campo. Originally, students had to travel to the capital for education beyond the 4th grade. Then, in 1950, a law changed everything. This law, number 613, paved the way for the creation of state high schools in smaller cities, leading to the birth of the Ginásio Estadual João Ramalho. Although officially established in 1950, the Instituto João Ramalho first opened its doors in March 1952. Its initial location was on the former Praça Samuel Sabatini, now Avenida Redenção. The school moved to its current location on Rua José Bonifácio in March 1966. This move was made possible by a partnership between the city and the state government. Today, the Instituto João Ramalho serves approximately 2,400 students with a dedicated team of 90 teachers, focusing on high school education. Over the years, it has played a pivotal role in shaping the lives of countless individuals in São Bernardo do Campo. The Instituto João Ramalho celebrated its 50th anniversary with a grand celebration. The event featured a performance by the São Bernardo Symphony Band. The opening ceremony included notable figures like Vice-Mayor Maurício de Castro, an alumnus himself. Former students like singer Gessy Soares de Lima, discovered by Silvio Santos, also attended. Even soccer player Gustavo Néri, then a left-back for São Paulo, was invited. The city donated a commemorative plaque, marking the school’s 50 years of service. Music, dance, gifts, and historical photo displays filled the day. The Instituto João Ramalho stands not only as a place of learning but also as a symbol of the community’s commitment to education.
