On a crisp São Paulo morning in 1914, Paroquia Santo Antônio da Barra Funda was born. Before that, the Barra Funda community relied on a small chapel connected to the Santa Cecília Parish. But on February 2nd, Archbishop Dom Duarte Leopoldo e Silva declared the area its own parish, dedicated to Saint Anthony. The very next day, Father José Mario Fernandes became its first leader. Paroquia Santo Antônio da Barra Funda quickly became the heart of this vibrant community. Decades later, Father Vicente Miguel Marino took the helm in 1953. He shepherded the parish for an impressive 40 years. Father Marino was beloved for his dedication and built a six-story social center near the church. He even oversaw the demolition of the original church, deeming it too small for his growing flock. The current Paroquia Santo Antônio da Barra Funda building began construction in 1972. It was finally inaugurated on March 22, 1980, with a mass led by Cardinal Dom Paulo Evaristo Arns. Today, this church stands as a testament to the enduring faith and community spirit of Barra Funda. It’s a place where the echoes of a century of prayers and celebrations still resonate.
