Surely the Michener Institute has quite the story. The Michener Institute of Education at UHN is special. It is located in downtown Toronto. But first let’s step back in time.
In 1958, Diana Michener Schatz founded the Toronto Institute of Medical Technology. This was the start of the Michener Institute. The first program was in Medical Laboratory Technology. It was at Toronto General Hospital. This pilot program showed the value of combining education with clinical experience. Doctors and medical technologists developed it together.
Years passed and the institute grew. In 1972, it moved to its current location at 222 St. Patrick Street. Then in 1990, the name changed to The Michener Institute. This was in honour of Diana’s father, Roland Michener. He was a former Governor General of Canada. The Ontario Ministry of Health funds the Michener Institute.
The Michener Institute has two schools. One is the School of Applied Health Sciences. The other is the School of Continuing Education. The School of Applied Health Sciences offers certifications in many medical technologies. These include Chiropody and Cardiovascular Perfusion. Also Diagnostic Cytology and Medical Laboratory Science are offered. Respiratory Therapy, Ultrasound, Radiation Therapy, and Genetics Technology are further options. The Michener Institute also has joint programs with the University of Toronto.
In 2008, The Michener Institute celebrated 50 years. It had been 50 years in applied health science education. A significant change occurred in 2016. The Michener Institute integrated with the University Health Network UHN. It became The Michener Institute of Education at UHN. This partnership embedded the school within the hospital network.
The goal was to integrate teaching with clinical practice and research. This would provide students with a more current and thorough education. It also aimed to improve learning for healthcare workers. The integration would speed up the transfer of research from labs to clinical practice. The Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, inspired this integration. It was the first partnership of its kind in Canada.
The Michener Institute offers many programs. The School of Applied Health Sciences has full-time and part-time options. There are also continuing education programs. Full-time programs include Genetics Technology and Nuclear Medicine. Also Medical Laboratory Sciences and Respiratory Therapy are offered. Part-time programs include Anesthesia Assistant and MRI. The Michener Institute offers bachelor’s degrees. These are available through joint programs with the University of Toronto in Medical Radiation Sciences.
Michener is known for preparing students well. Its graduates are highly sought after. This is due to the combination of academic knowledge and practical skills. The Michener Institute is Canada’s only post-secondary institution. It focuses solely on healthcare professional education.
