Gazing out at the shimmering expanse before us, we find ourselves at the Bocca di porto di Lido. This is more than just an entrance to the Venetian Lagoon. It’s a gateway through time, echoing with the whispers of history. The Bocca di porto di Lido, also known as Porto di Lido-San Nicolò, stands as the northern access point to this magical city. It’s nestled between Punta Sabbioni and the Lido island, the very portal for passenger and ferry traffic into Venice. Its name pays homage to the nearby church of San Nicolò, a sanctuary safeguarding the relics of the patron saint of navigators. Imagine the countless vessels that have traversed these waters, guided by the watchful eye of their protector. The Bocca di porto di Lido has witnessed the ebb and flow of Venetian life for centuries. Before the formation of Punta Sabbioni, this area boasted not one, but three entrances to the sea. They were situated between Lido and Vignole islands, between Vignole and Sant’Erasmo, and finally, between Sant’Erasmo and Treporti. The Lido port was once Venice’s primary access point, heavily fortified with structures like the San Nicolò and Sant’Andrea forts. Later, the Austrians added the Massimiliano Tower. The Venetian Republic understood the strategic importance of the Bocca di porto di Lido. They entrusted its defense to a fleet of galleys, commanded by the Admiral of the Lido. The ceremonial “Marriage of the Sea” during the Festa della Sensa took place here, just off the shores by the church. The modern Bocca di porto di Lido is now flanked by two long breakwaters. Even more striking are the ongoing MOSE project developments. A third breakwater in the open sea, an artificial island, and a lateral basin will eventually allow access even when the flood barriers are raised against high tides, reshaping the very landscape of this historic entrance. Today, this bustling port is a vital artery of Venice. It welcomes the world to the city’s wonders, continuing its legacy as a gateway to history, culture, and enchantment.
