This charming house, nestled in the heart of Upper Hutt, holds over a century of history within its walls. John Golder, a man of many trades, built this quaint residence in 1876. He initially named it Straven Cottage, in honor of his father’s birthplace in Scotland. John and his wife, Jane, expanded the cottage over the years, adding rooms to accommodate their growing family. Golder’s Cottage remained a family home for over a century, a testament to the enduring strength of family ties. In 1985, the Upper Hutt City Council, recognizing its historical significance, purchased Golder’s Cottage. Today, it stands as a museum, meticulously preserved to offer a glimpse into the daily life of a pioneer family in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. As you wander through the rooms, take a moment to appreciate John’s craftsmanship. Much of the furniture on display is his handiwork.
