Hidden within the Ishikawa Prefecture, Tatsumi-yagura stands as a silent sentinel. It whispers tales of Kanazawa Castle’s powerful past. Tatsumi-yagura wasn’t always alone. It once shared the high stone wall overlooking the Hyakken Moat with two other watchtowers: Naka Yagura and Ushitora Yagura. Together, these three yaguras formed a formidable line of defense. They protected the castle’s most vulnerable approaches, the Kodatsuno and Kenrokuen areas. The name “Tatsumi” itself is a clue to its position. It means “south-east,” referring to its location relative to the castle’s donjon. This strategic placement allowed Tatsumi-yagura to command a sweeping view of the surrounding landscape. Imagine the vigilant guards, eyes scanning the horizon for any sign of threat. They were responsible for the safety of Kanazawa Castle, a symbol of power and prestige. Tatsumi-yagura was more than just a defensive structure. It was a key part of a complex network of surveillance. While Tatsumi-yagura, Naka Yagura, and Ushitora Yagura focused on external threats, another watchtower played a different role. The Inui Yagura, located to the north-west of the donjon, kept watch over the entire castle, including the Ni-no-maru. This comprehensive system ensured that Kanazawa Castle was well-protected from all sides. Today, only remnants of Tatsumi-yagura and Ushitora Yagura remain. They serve as a poignant reminder of the castle’s former glory. As you stand before these weathered stones, let your imagination transport you back to the Edo period. Picture the bustling activity of the castle, the watchful eyes of the guards, and the strategic importance of Tatsumi-yagura. It stands as a testament to the ingenuity and foresight of the castle’s builders.
