“A place for toads to spawn.” That’s what Krötenlaichteich means. The name alone hints at the importance of this small lake. It is a haven for amphibians in Würzburg.

Krötenlaichteich may seem like just another pond. But it plays a vital role in local biodiversity. Every spring, toads, frogs, and newts migrate. They journey from the woods to their spawning waters. Their inner compass guides them back to the lakes. They seek ponds and puddles. It is where they were born to reproduce.

These creatures face dangers. They must cross busy roads. Volunteers step in to help. They build fences and collect amphibians. They ensure the animals reach their destination safely.

Landrat Thomas Eberth joins these efforts. Every year, he helps rescue amphibians. Equipped with a headlamp and bucket, he collects animals. He works alongside BUND Naturschutz members. Together, they protect these creatures.

Eberth recalls helping frogs since his youth. Actually, mostly toads migrate here. Frogs are less common. About 98 percent are toads. The amphibian migration starts early. It depends on warm temperatures.

The amphibian migration lasts about three months. It typically begins between February and March. The animals are collected at night. It is in the early morning and late evening hours.

These rescue missions are not without risk. Both humans and animals face danger. The roadside can be perilous. So please be careful drivers.

The destruction of habitats shrinks amphibian populations. The enormous traffic density is also a factor. Amphibians are under special legal protection.

The BUND Naturschutz asks drivers to be considerate. Obey speed limits near amphibian fences. Watch for volunteers collecting animals. Slow down on roads near ponds or wetlands.

The Krötenlaichteich and similar bodies of water are essential. They offer vital habitat. Protecting these areas is key. It ensures that common species don’t become rare.

The Krötenlaichteich needs protection. This small lake is a crucial breeding ground. It highlights the need for conservation. It is a place where nature’s delicate balance plays out each year. So next time you pass by Krötenlaichteich remember its true purpose. It is more than just a pond. It is a lifeline for Würzburg’s amphibians.
