The East Capitol Street Church of Christ began on April 8 1962. The first services occurred at the YMCA downtown. Forty-seven people attended. All had worshipped at the Thirteenth St congregation. They envisioned a church in northeast DC.
Sister congregations supported this idea. They gave encouragement and financial help. Many hands helped form the East Capitol Street Church of Christ. Junius R Stevens was the first minister. George Barnett was one of the first elders. Barnett was a building contractor. He built the facilities where the church meets.
The church doubled its membership in three years. It quickly became self-supporting. It ministered to the community and foreign lands. Radio broadcasts spread its message. The church supported missionaries in Ghana and the Bahamas. They assisted Herald of Truth and Rainbow Christian Services. Student preachers and Camp WaMaVa also received support. The church fed the hungry and homeless.
Dr Wade M Poole is the current minister. Brother Alphonso Nelson is a leader. The East Capitol Street Church of Christ continues its mission. Its resources may be limited. But they do all they can for the Lord. They believe a better church begins with each person.
