Journey back in time with me to the Dvaravati era, a period between the 6th and 13th centuries. Nakhon Pathom Province, then a bustling port city, thrived on the Gulf of Thailand. Imagine ships arriving from distant lands, carrying not only goods but also cultural influences from India and beyond. Nakhon Pathom Province, meaning “first city” in the ancient Pali language, truly lived up to its name. It was a central hub, a melting pot of cultures. This era saw the rise of Phra Pathom Chedi, a structure that would later become a symbol of the province. As centuries passed, the river that nourished Nakhon Pathom Province shifted its course. The city’s inhabitants gradually migrated east, settling in Nakhon Chai Si. Nakhon Pathom Province was left deserted, a ghost of its former glory. Yet, the seeds of its rebirth were sown in the heart of King Mongkut, Rama IV. During his time as a monk, he stumbled upon the forgotten Phra Pathom Chedi. Recognizing its significance, he ordered its restoration. This act breathed new life into Nakhon Pathom Province, drawing people back to the ancient city. Today, the towering Phra Pathom Chedi stands as the world’s largest Buddhist chedi, a testament to the province’s rich history and enduring spiritual importance. But Nakhon Pathom Province is more than just its historical monuments. It’s a province abundant with fruit orchards, particularly pomelos, a sweet citrus fruit that has earned Nakhon Pathom Province the nickname “sweet pomelo town.” From ancient kingdoms to modern orchards, Nakhon Pathom Province offers a captivating blend of history, culture, and natural beauty.
