Venture into a serene corner of Tokyo. Here stands the Kaiun Enmei Jizoson. It is a place where heartfelt prayers meet the gentle guardians of faith.

The Kaiun Enmei Jizoson offers solace. It is a sanctuary for long life. Enmei-do means Hall of Long Life.

Imagine stepping closer to the Jizo statues. They are protectors of travelers, pregnant women, and children. These figures embody compassion.

Let’s delve into the history of the Kaiun Enmei Jizoson. It dates back to at least 1725. Back then it contained only a small Jizo statue. In 1813, a traveler noticed a strange rock. It lay in the Araragi River near Tsumago. The rock featured a discolored patch. It resembled a reclining Jizo. The local priest brought the rock here. It was placed on a lotus-shaped stone base. It was enshrined in a two-tiered miniature shrine. The original Jizo statue sits on the upper level. But it remains unseen now.

Many Jizo statues wear red bibs and hoods. Since ancient times, red has warded off evil in Japan. People place red garments on Jizo. They pray spirits go to heaven without suffering.

Consider the giant prayer beads on the shrine’s left. People held these beads. They chanted sutras repeatedly. This practice is hyakumanben nenbutsu. It means a million recitals of the nenbutsu prayer.

Notice the senmaifuda. These are pieces of paper stuck on the porch. Pilgrims write their names on them. This serves as proof of their visits.

The Kaiun Enmei Jizoson embodies more than stone and tradition. It represents hope. It offers protection. It is a poignant reminder of life’s preciousness. Prayers said here are for long life. A prayer to Jizo, is a prayer for a long life.
