Let’s talk about service times. Sunday School meets at 10 am. Sunday Service is at 11 am. Holy Communion is on the first Sunday of every month. Bible Study happens Wednesday at 7:30 pm. Prayer and Praise also takes place then. New Members Orientation is also Wednesday at 7:30 pm. Baby Dedication is on the first Sunday of each month. Due to Covid-19 services are only held on Sundays at 11:00 am.
Now I will tell you something about the Potomac Baptist Association. Its foundation goes back to 1790. Four men from the Ketoctin Baptist Association in Virginia crossed the Potomac River. They began preaching in the Nanjemoy area of Southern Maryland. Three years later Nanjemoy Baptist Church was constituted. It then joined the Ketoctin Association.
By 1820 the Columbia Association formed. Churches came from the Ketoctin and Baltimore Association. These were from Virginia and Maryland. The original number of founding churches was 16. By 1837 the Maryland Baptist Union Association was founded. Nanjemoy was the first church to join after its charter.
Over time this Association grouped itself. It went into eastern middle and western districts. Eventually through the Baltimore Baptist Association the Northern and Southern District Associations were formed. In 1934 the Southern District Association formed at Nanjemoy Baptist Church. Southern Baptist Churches in Anne Arundel Charles and Prince George’s Counties made up the Southern District.
The Potomac Baptist Association or PBA was formed in 1963. It ministers to Calvert Charles and St. Mary’s Counties. Today PBA continues to minister to these counties. That includes the southernmost areas of Prince George’s and Anne Arundel Counties.
The first Annual Meeting of the PBA was held October 28 1963. It took place at the Nanjemoy Baptist Church. From its beginning the Association knew there was a need for new churches. In 1967 the PBA called its first Director of Missions William Bill I Barkley Jr. After his retirement in 1991 the Association called Dr Richard D Logsdon. He retired in 2015. The Association then called Dr Keith Corrick. He retired in December 2019. In November 2021 the Association called Pastor Fredrick Fred Caudle. He became Director of Missions and co-vocationally serves as Senior Pastor at the Church @ St Charles in Waldorf.
Today PBA serves a Southern Maryland area. This area has dramatically changed since the earliest days. Population surges economic growth and cultural changes have shifted the landscape. Despite this the cooperative spirit remains strong. Local congregations maintain their good news gospel of Jesus Christ.
The mission in Southern Maryland is bigger than any one church can do. The Potomac Baptist Association was formed by churches and for the churches. The PBA encourages churches to work together. They share a common mission setting and values.
At that first meeting these words were recorded in our history. The challenge is immense. Many do not know Christ. Many Christians are un-enlisted. If the Association is to accomplish its purpose it must have the strong support of the churches. That means their prayers their giving and their full cooperation. Then the fellowship of churches will be strong. Their outreach will be effective as they work together. They will reach their parts of the world for Christ.
Potomac Baptist Church has a strong history. They believe God has kept a wide-open door for their Association. They walk through it together glorifying His name. Together they can do more than they can do separately.
