A rocky outcrop rises before us. This is Otvovická skála. It’s more than just a rock face though. It’s a natural monument a protected area teeming with life.
Otvovická skála is located near Otvovice. It’s a significant site for its diverse plant and animal life. This rocky area is locally known as Kozí kopec or Kozí hák. It’s a striking feature rising about forty meters above the Zákolanský potok stream.
The area is protected because of its unique ecosystem. The southern side of the rocky ridge holds rare warm-loving plants. These plants thrive in the rocky and grassy habitats. Did you know that the area is not easily accessible to tourists? A marked trail passes near the base of the rock.
The Otvovická skála is made of Proterozoic spilite. This is a type of volcanic rock. It’s layered with a thin layer of limestone. These rocks provide a surprisingly varied habitat. Many species of plants have adapted to life here. These include the golden Saxifraga aizoides. Other plants are the Sedum album Sedum sexangulare Sanguisorba minor Potentilla arenaria Pulsatilla vulgaris Stipa pennata Stipa capillata Polygala vulgaris Astragalus austriacus Corydalis solida.
The fauna is equally diverse. Several bird species make their homes here. These birds prefer steppe-like habitats. The birds include the common woodlark yellowhammer and the meadow pipit. Reptiles such as the common lizard and amphibians like the green toad also live here. The area supports many invertebrates. Many of them prefer warm and dry conditions. These include insects spiders and myriapods.
Otvovická skála is a hidden gem. It represents the beauty of nature and its resilience. The area has been protected since 1985. The area is marked with red stripes and signs.
