Have you ever wondered about the people who lived in these grand apartments? Today, we stand in front of the Reismannhof, a remarkable example of Vienna’s ‘Red Vienna’ era. Built in 1924-1926, this housing complex was a testament to social progress and the city’s commitment to providing affordable, decent housing for its citizens. The Reismannhof was part of a massive building program launched in 1923, which aimed to create a better life for the working class. These new apartments were a stark contrast to the cramped and unsanitary tenement buildings that were common at the time.

The complex is comprised of over 600 apartments and features a variety of commercial spaces and even a kindergarten. What sets the Reismannhof apart is its architectural richness. Designed by the renowned architects Hermann Aichinger and Heinrich Schmid, the building embodies a blend of traditional and modern styles.

What might not be obvious is that the Reismannhof was a focal point during the turbulent events of February 1934. The complex, alongside the nearby Fuchsenfeldhof, served as a stronghold for the Republican Schutzbund, a socialist paramilitary organization, during their fight against the Austrofascist regime. The buildings witnessed fierce battles between the Schutzbund and government forces.

And finally, the Reismannhof is more than just a housing project. It is a reminder of the city’s rich history and its socialist past. The building was renamed in 1949 after Edmund Reismann, a prominent social democrat who tragically perished in the Auschwitz concentration camp. His memory lives on through the name of the building, a tribute to the ideals of social justice and equality that he stood for.
