Over two hundred million Hong Kong dollars. That is the approved project estimate for the water supply project that includes this Sau Mau Ping Fresh Water Pumping Station.
This fresh water pumping station plays a vital role in Hong Kong’s water infrastructure. It helps ensure a reliable supply of fresh water for residents and businesses. Let’s delve into the story behind this essential facility.
The Sau Mau Ping Fresh Water Pumping Station is part of a larger water supply project. The project aimed to improve water services to housing developments in the Anderson Road area. Construction commenced in November 2011. It was completed in February 2015.
The project scope was comprehensive. It included the construction of this fresh water pumping station at Sau Mau Ping Road. This station has a pumping capacity of 22,000 cubic meters per day. A fresh water service reservoir was built at Anderson Road with a capacity of 12,000 cubic meters. A salt water service reservoir was also constructed at Anderson Road. It has a capacity of 2,800 cubic meters.
Approximately two kilometers of fresh and salt water mains were laid. These pipes ranged in size from 300 mm to 900 mm in diameter. Additional salt water pumps were installed at the Shum Wan Shan salt water pumping station. These pumps have a capacity of 5,200 cubic meters per day. Additional fresh water pumps were installed at the existing Shum Wan Shan fresh water pumping station. These pumps have a capacity of 22,000 cubic meters per day.
AECOM Asia Co. Ltd. served as the consultant for this project. Contract No. 6/WSD/11 governed the construction work. The Design Division within the Water Supplies Department oversaw the project.
Interestingly, this wasn’t the only water infrastructure upgrade in the area. Another project focused on integrating the Lion Rock high-level fresh water primary service reservoirs. This integration included the Tseung Kwan O fresh water primary service reservoir. It involved laying about 1.4 kilometers of fresh water mains. The sizes ranged from 600 mm to 1,400 mm in diameter. These mains were laid in Jordan Valley, Sau Mau Ping, and Tseung Kwan O new town. The Shum Wan Shan fresh water pumping station was also upgraded. Its capacity increased from 135,000 cubic meters per day to 350,000 cubic meters per day.
