Ready to unearth a hidden secret? Right here before us lies the Niklashöhle. Its story whispers of deaf rocks and bat-filled chambers.

The Niklashöhle isn’t just another hole in the ground. It is a gateway to a world of geological mystery and local legend. While its fame might not rival Vienna’s grand palaces, its charm resides in its enigmatic nature. The Dreidärrischenhöhle is also called Niklashöhle.

Local dialect gives us a clue to one of the cave’s names. “Därrisch” means deaf. So, Dreidärrischenhöhle translates to “Cave of the Three Deaf”. What are the three deaf things? Some say they are the massive rocks within. These silent giants never answer back. Another theory suggests it is the cliff face around the entrance. It creates no echo so it is virtually deaf.

The Niklashöhle, or Dreidärrischenhöhle, was discovered in the 19th century. Briefly a show cave, electric lights illuminated its depths. This public access was cut short by World War II in 1939. The cave remained closed and unguarded. During the 1990s, it suffered from vandalism. To protect it, an iron gate was installed in 2000.

The Dreidärrischenhöhle extends for 230 meters. It descends 19 meters into the earth. This cave is home to at least four protected species of bats. These creatures need our respect. Please be quiet when you visit the Niklashöhle. From November to March, avoid entering entirely. This protects the bats during their hibernation. Never light a fire inside or near the entrance.

The cave has also been known as Siebenbrunnentalhöhle. This name comes from its location. It is in the Siebenbrunnental which translates to Seven Springs Valley. Saulucke is another name for it. This name is not commonly used anymore.

The Dreidärrischenhöhle officially opened to the public on August 23, 1926. A collapse occurred within the cave in 1980. Today, a cave trekking operator leads guided tours.

So, as you stand before the Niklashöhle, consider its layers of history. It is a shelter for bats. It echoes with unanswered questions. It is a reminder of Vienna’s hidden natural wonders. The Niklashöhle invites you to listen to the silence.
