Let me tell you about the fascinating story of this place before it became the Ching Kwok Buddhist Temple. For much of the 20th century, this building at 300 Bathurst Street was a hub for Toronto’s Ukrainian-Canadian community. In 1927, the Ukrainian Labour Temple was built here. Designed by George Martell Miller, it replaced two houses. It was more than just a building. It was a community center.
Inside, you would have found offices for unions. There were social spaces, a library with Ukrainian and Russian books and even a tobacconist’s shop. A Ukrainian language school taught children. However, the Temple became associated with communist activities. This led to government scrutiny and even a temporary seizure during World War II. There was even a bombing in 1950 that injured several people during a children’s concert.
The Association of United Ukrainian Canadians sold the building later. In 1994, the Ching Kwok Buddhist Temple found its home here. Founded in 1985, the temple has transformed the space.
