Could a dog truly save a saint? Here at the Church of Saint Roch in Žižkov, that very question hangs in the air. The Church of Saint Roch, nestled within a serene green space on Olšany Square, whispers tales of plague, resilience, and perhaps, canine miracles. Saint Roch, the protector against epidemics, found his home here, amidst what was once a grim reminder of the plague’s devastating touch. The year was 1680. Prague was gripped by a plague so fierce that new cemeteries, like the one here in Olšany, had to be hastily established outside the city walls. The Old Town City Council, desperate for solace and protection, commissioned this very church, dedicating it to Saint Roch, the patron saint of plague victims. Originally a humble cemetery chapel, the Church of Saint Roch bore witness to a tide of sorrow, serving as the final resting place for countless plague victims. Over time, however, as the plague’s grip loosened, Olšany Cemetery began accepting regular burials, the somber atmosphere gradually giving way to a sense of continuity. The Church of Saint Roch transitioned from a place of mourning to a vibrant center of community life. By 1842, the Church of Saint Roch assumed the role of a full-fledged parish church, a transformation reflecting the city’s healing and resilience. The church itself, a Baroque masterpiece, stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith. Its elliptical dome, often mistaken for a rotunda, reaches towards the heavens, while the supporting arcades and gallery whisper echoes of past prayers. Inside, the main altar, a Neo-Renaissance creation, draws the eye. A painting at its heart depicts a chilling scene of plague’s devastation, contrasted with the serene image of the Virgin Mary as Queen of Heaven. Saint Roch himself is featured, alongside fellow plague saints Sebastian and Rosalia, a silent promise of protection and hope. Look closely, and you’ll discover other treasures within this sanctuary: the altar to the Virgin Mary, adorned with a Heřman painting, the altar to Saint Joseph, and a statue of Saint John the Baptist, a silent visitor from Switzerland. Even the Stations of the Cross and the grand fresco above the sacristy entrance contribute to the church’s rich narrative. And then there’s the dog. The faithful companion often depicted by Saint Roch’s side, a loaf of bread clutched in his mouth. A reminder of the legend of Saint Roch, stricken by plague, alone in the forest, saved by a dog’s unwavering loyalty. Did the dog truly lick his wounds and bring him sustenance? We may never know for sure. But here at the Church of Saint Roch, in the heart of Žižkov, the story lives on, a blend of faith, history, and the enduring bond between humans and animals.
