The Takoma Park Neighborhood Library opened its doors in 1911. It quickly became a vital part of the community. But its story begins even earlier with a man named Andrew Carnegie.
Carnegie was a Scottish immigrant who made a vast fortune in steel. He believed in giving back to society. So he funded the construction of over 1,600 libraries worldwide. These were nicknamed “Carnegie Libraries.”
Washington D.C. benefited greatly from Carnegie’s generosity. The first Carnegie library in D.C. opened in 1903. Carnegie then promised more funding for neighborhood libraries. Takoma Park was chosen as a location due to its distance from the main library. Also its proximity to schools and its proven need for a library played a role.
Before the Takoma Park Neighborhood Library was built a small lending library existed. It was known as the Takoma Club and Library. It opened in 1900. Carnegie’s gift of $40,000 made the current building possible. The architectural firm Marsh and Peter designed the Library.
The Takoma Park Neighborhood Library started with 3,800 books. These were purchased or moved from the main library. The building itself is now part of the Takoma Park National Register Historic District. This designation happened in 1983.
In 2009 the Takoma Park Neighborhood Library underwent a major renovation. The aim was to modernize the library. At the same time, it had to preserve its original charm. Forrester Construction led the renovation. The project restored the library’s interior and exterior. It matched the original Renaissance Revival style. The renovated Takoma Park Neighborhood Library received several awards. These included the Committee of 100 on the Federal City Vision Award and the Mayor’s Award for Excellence in Historic Preservation.
