Lost in the annals of time, KG Oberdöbling whispers stories of a Vienna long past. KG Oberdöbling wasn’t always part of Vienna’s bustling 19th district, Döbling. Before 1892, KG Oberdöbling stood as an independent municipality, a quiet village on the outskirts of the burgeoning city. Imagine strolling along the Hofzeile, the heart of old KG Oberdöbling. This very street witnessed the village’s growth, a slow but steady expansion from its humble beginnings. KG Oberdöbling wasn’t immune to hardship. The second siege of Vienna in 1683 devastated the vineyards that were the lifeblood of the village’s economy. Years later, only a fraction were still in use. KG Oberdöbling bore witness to Vienna’s tumultuous history, even playing a small role during the plague of 1713. Of the 31 houses that stood in KG Oberdöbling, only five fell victim to the deadly disease, resulting in 13 deaths. In the 18th century, KG Oberdöbling comprised three distinct rows of houses: the Hofzeile, Kirchenzeile, and Bachzeile. The proximity of KG Oberdöbling to the emperor’s hunting grounds proved to be a boon. Nobility and wealthy Viennese citizens sought refuge from city life, building second residences in the peaceful village. This paved the way for five new streets, shaping the KG Oberdöbling we see remnants of today. This influx of wealth and privilege set the stage for KG Oberdöbling’s transformation into the elegant neighborhood it is now. KG Oberdöbling experienced a rapid population surge in the late 18th and 19th centuries, growing from a quaint village of 932 inhabitants to a thriving community of 14,460 by 1890. In 1892, KG Oberdöbling, along with several neighboring villages, was incorporated into Vienna, becoming an integral part of Döbling. But beneath the modern facade of KG Oberdöbling lies the spirit of this historic village. The echoes of its past resonate in the streets and buildings, a testament to its resilience and enduring charm.
