Founded in 1859 Eureka Springs First Baptist Church stands as a testament to Tampa’s enduring faith. Imagine a small community of only 500 to 600 people. Sixteen charter members laid the foundation for this church. Their first service in a new building was held on July 23 1859. The current sanctuary building wasn’t completed until 1925. An educational building was added three years later. The church has had 21 pastors plus many interim ministers and staff. Today Eureka Springs First Baptist Church boasts approximately 900 members. They are active in various ministries including youth programs and mission groups. A business Bible study is held every Thursday at noon. Employed members can learn about the Bible and have lunch. The church also hosts a Harvest Festival on Halloween. This family friendly event provides an alternative to traditional trick or treating. Children are encouraged to dress up as God’s creations. Witches or anything considered satanic are discouraged. Dr Jim Knight serves as the senior minister. He’s a graduate of prestigious seminaries. He’s written books including Building Blocks for New Christians. His new book Devotions to Deepen Your Devotion is eagerly awaited. Dr Knight’s family is also deeply involved in the church. His son Jeff is an ordained minister in Atlanta. His daughter Celisa is married to Keith Bonner the church’s education minister. For over 160 years Eureka Springs First Baptist Church has served as a spiritual anchor in Tampa. It continues to adapt and grow reflecting its community’s ever changing needs.
