Imagine rose petals gently falling from above as a couple exchanges vows. That’s a common sight at Paroquia Santa Teresinha do Menino Jesus. This church is a beloved spot for weddings in São Paulo.

The Paroquia Santa Teresinha do Menino Jesus stands on Rua Maranhão. It is located in the Higienópolis neighborhood near Avenida Angélica. The church belongs to the Arquidiocese de São Paulo. It is part of the Santa Cecília sector.

Let’s step back in time. The Paroquia Santa Teresinha do Menino Jesus opened in 1928. Antonio Vincenti, an Italian engineer, designed it. Fiorello Panelli oversaw the construction. However, the interior remained unfinished.

Carmelite friars arrived in São Paulo in 1923. They sought a place for a convent and worship. Their first chapel was in Cambucy. It was dedicated to Beata Teresinha do Menino Jesus. The chapel served the friars and the public. Mass was held every Sunday. Children learned catechism there.

The friars decided to build a larger church. The location chosen was on Rua Maranhão. In 1925, they inaugurated a new chapel. It was dedicated to Santa Teresinha. Soon, the chapel became too small. Construction of the Santuário de Santa Teresinha do Menino Jesus began. Dom Duarte Leopoldo e Silva blessed the cornerstone.

Antonio Vincenti also designed the Basílica Santa Teresinha in Rio de Janeiro. Fiorello Panelli was the construction engineer. Antonio Basile was the master builder. The religious order managed the project. The church was ready in less than two years.

Inside the Paroquia Santa Teresinha do Menino Jesus, the style is Romanesque. The central altar is made of Carrara marble. It features an image of Santa Teresinha barefoot. She stands next to the Child Jesus. He leans against the Holy Face. Teresa gathers roses from her apron. She scatters them to the world. White lilies and a coat of arms adorn the base. The falling flowers are caught by a Brazilian flag.

Dona Sofia Neves Torres donated the image of Santa Teresinha. It was brought from Lisieux, France. Count Matarazzo, an Italian-Brazilian businessman, gifted the bell.

The church actively promotes charitable works. Currently, Frei Everaldo Abril Pontes leads the parish. He took office in March 2020.

Remember the rose petals? Paroquia Santa Teresinha do Menino Jesus is famous for this beautiful tradition. During the exchange of vows, rose petals cascade from the ceiling. It creates a magical moment for the newlyweds. It symbolizes love and blessings.
