Established in 1997 by Bishop John R Keating Saint Raymond of Peñafort began humbly. A simple house on Triple Ridge Road served as the first rectory office and daily Mass chapel. The rapid growth forced the congregation to hold Masses in various locations. Christ Methodist Church hosted daily services. Weekend Masses took place at West Springfield High School. Finally the Greater Springfield Volunteer Fire Department Hall became a temporary sanctuary. This period of transition highlights the unwavering spirit of Saint Raymond’s community. Their faith remained strong despite the challenges. They even nicknamed their temporary location “the Holy Fire Hall”.
In June 2000 Father James Gould became pastor. His leadership marked a period of extraordinary growth. Not only did the parish expand numerically but financially and architecturally. Father Gould oversaw the construction of this beautiful church completed in December 2006. Bishop Paul S Loverde presided over the dedication Mass a momentous occasion for the parish.
The 850 seat church houses a parish hall a library and eight classrooms. The church boasts stunning stained glass some dating back over a century from closed churches in Pennsylvania and New York.
