In 1871, a vision began to unfold in Prince George’s County, Maryland. This vision would soon become Seabrook. Thomas Seabrook, a topographical engineer with the Pennsylvania Railroad, saw the potential for a tranquil retreat community. He purchased 500 acres surrounding the planned Seabrook train station. This marked the birth of Seabrook, a community intrinsically linked to the railroad’s expansion. The Washington Branch of the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad opened in 1872 with a station at Seabrook. The station spurred initial development. A station building and three Gothic cottages appeared. Commercial buildings and a schoolhouse soon followed. Seabrook in 1895 got its first school. Seabrook by 1914 was still a small settlement clustered around the intersection of Seabrook Road and the railroad tracks. By 1957, Seabrook had grown to encompass about 185 houses along ten streets. The layout formed a grid, aligning with the railroad line. Seabrook stretched from present-day Good Luck Road south to Annapolis Road. The 20th century saw continuous residential development filling in vacant lots within Seabrook. Commercial growth concentrated along Annapolis Road and Lanham-Severn Road. The original railroad station and early commercial buildings have vanished. A few early dwellings and the old schoolhouse remain as echoes of Seabrook’s past. Much of modern Seabrook, partly known as Seabrook Acres, consists of red brick homes along Lanham-Severn Road. This road is now designated as Maryland Route 564. Many homes were built in the 1950s. They housed employees of the newly established NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. Recent development brought apartment complexes and larger structures. Seabrook, however, retains its residential character. Many single-family homes stand on green lawns shaded by mature oak trees. Seabrook, according to the 2020 census, is home to 19,627 residents. Seabrook’s growth reflects its convenient location near Washington, D.C. and the appeal of its peaceful suburban setting.
