“Gather the nations to reach the nations.” That is the vision of Immanuel Baptist Church. Today, we stand before a church with a rich history. It reflects a community dedicated to faith and service. Immanuel Baptist Church is more than just a building. It is a living testament to the power of community.
Immanuel Baptist Church started as Alexander Street Baptist Church in 1866. It began with only 27 members. In 1888, the church moved to Jarvis and Wellesley. That is when it adopted the name Immanuel Baptist Church. This marked a new chapter in its journey.
The church faced challenges. In 1948, the Sunday School closed due to the polio epidemic. This was a difficult time for everyone.
In 1967, Immanuel Baptist Church made a significant decision. The congregation chose to relocate to its current site. People were moving to the suburbs. Immanuel merged with Pleasant View Church. At that time, the congregation was mostly Anglo.
A pivotal moment arrived in 1974. Immanuel Baptist Church intentionally focused on multiculturalism. The goal was to mirror the community’s diversity. Today, that diversity is still very visible.
The church embraced change in 1981. It moved to blended worship. Traditional and contemporary music were combined. An expansion was added to the building to accommodate growth.
Immanuel Baptist Church has always been committed to its youth. In 1987, “Kids Company” and “Camp on the Rock” were formed. These camp programs provided enriching experiences for children.
In 1989, the church streamlined its structure. The Board of Deacons and Board of Management merged into one Council. This improved decision-making.
Immanuel Baptist Church broke barriers in 1994. It welcomed its first female associate pastor. This demonstrated its commitment to equality.
The church celebrated a major milestone in 2016. Immanuel Baptist Church marked 150 years of service.
Staying current, the church posted its first sermon on YouTube in 2018. This allowed it to reach a wider audience.
The COVID-19 pandemic presented new challenges in 2020. Immanuel Baptist Church closed for in-person worship. Services went virtual to keep the community connected.
Today, Immanuel Baptist Church continues to evolve. It strives to live passionately for God. The church embraces all people in true community. It challenges each other to grow in faith. It equips its members to serve in God’s world.
Pastor Bruce Burgess leads Immanuel Baptist Church. Sadie Adams-Smith serves as the Office Administrator. Together, they guide the church.
Immanuel Baptist Church holds services on Sundays at 10 a.m. Nursery and Children’s Sunday School are available during this time. The church believes worship happens when each individual brings their praise to God.
The church is located at 1100 Finch Avenue East. It is easily accessible by car and public transit.
