Overlooking the spires of Prague, Richtrova vila stands as a silent witness to centuries of history. Richtrova vila isn’t just a beautiful building. It’s a time capsule, perched on a cliff above the Lesser Town, near Prague Castle. The villa boasts two addresses: Na Opyši 5 and Staré zámecké schody 6. This elegant, neoclassical structure has witnessed a fascinating evolution. In 1799, Tomáš František Richter acquired a property called U Verdugů. His son, Karel Emanuel Richter, a councilman, embellished it and envisioned a grand expansion. This included two structures: a lower residential building and, importantly, Richtrova vila itself, built upon the site of a former vineyard cottage. Designed by architect Josef Peschka in 1832, Richtrova vila became a cherished family home for Karel Emanuel’s sons and their descendants. However, its story took a turn after World War II. The villa was confiscated and repurposed for diplomatic missions, housing the Cuban embassy. Later, it served the State Security and the Castle Guard. Richtrova vila returned to the Prague Castle Administration in 1992. Throughout the 1990s, its spaces hosted cultural and social events. A public competition in 2004 paved the way for a meticulous restoration, including the adjacent St. Wenceslas Vineyard. By 2008, both the villa and vineyard reopened to the public. Today, Richtrova vila houses the renowned Piano Nobile restaurant. This elegant venue has become a sought-after location for weddings, attracting both local and international couples. The restored St. Wenceslas Vineyard, dating back to the 10th century, adds to the villa’s allure. Here, among the Riesling and Pinot Noir vines, visitors can savor the legacy of a thousand years of winemaking. Richtrova vila, a testament to Prague’s rich history, offers not just stunning views but a taste of a timeless elegance.
