“This building looks quite unassuming, doesn’t it?” The Úřad městské části Praha-Lipence might not be the grandest structure in Prague, but it holds the stories of a district shaped by centuries of change. Situated where the Berounka River carves its path through Prague, Lipence is a blend of old and new. The Úřad itself stands as a symbol of this, a modern building that houses the administration of a district with deep historical roots. The name Lipence itself reflects its past. Originally, two separate villages, Lipenec and Lipany, existed here. Lipenec, the older of the two, can trace its written history back to 1268 as a possession of the Prague bishopric. Lipany, mentioned as early as 1115, were initially linked to the Kladruby Benedictine monastery. Interestingly, the area we know as Lipence was once even larger, encompassing the village of Báně, now part of Zbraslav. It wasn’t until the mid-19th century that Lipenec and Lipany merged, forming the village that would eventually become part of Prague in 1974. As you stand before the Úřad městské části Praha-Lipence, remember that you are at the heart of a community shaped by time, a place where history whispers through the streets. The quiet facade of the Úřad holds within it the echoes of changing rulers, the merging of communities, and the enduring spirit of Lipence.
