How high can you see from here? The Ping An Finance Center looms before us a giant of glass and steel. This isn’t just any building. It’s the tallest in Shenzhen the second tallest in China and one of the world’s top five.

Completed in 2017 the Ping An Finance Center is more than a skyscraper. It’s a statement a testament to Shenzhen’s rapid growth. It houses the headquarters of Ping An Insurance the very company that commissioned its construction. The name Ping An translates to “peace and safety” an apt description for the stability this company brings to the city.

Designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates its striking design is both elegant and functional. The building’s tapered shape reduces wind load a clever engineering feat. Its stainless steel facade weighing a staggering 1700 metric tons is also the largest in the world. This wasn’t just a matter of aesthetics. The 316L steel chosen was specifically resistant to Shenzhen’s salty coastal air ensuring the building’s beauty endures.

The observation deck Free Sky located on the 116th floor boasts the highest such observation deck in the world. Imagine the breathtaking 360-degree panoramic view stretching from the city below to the distant horizon. The original plan included a 60-meter antenna. It would have made the Ping An Finance Center even taller the second tallest in the world. However the antenna was scrapped. Concerns were raised about potential interference with flight paths.

The sheer scale of this building is astounding. It has 115 aboveground levels and 5 more below ground. Its construction wasn’t without its challenges. Work was briefly halted in 2013 due to concerns about the quality of the concrete. Tests ultimately proved the structure sound.

The Ping An Finance Center has even attracted daredevils. Several rooftopping attempts have been documented both before and after its completion. These acts highlight the architectural marvel’s allure. It’s not just a building. It’s a symbol of human ambition and achievement a landmark that has redefined Shenzhen’s skyline. Let’s move on to discover more of the city’s amazing features.
