Doutnác Hill rises 433 meters above sea level within the Karlštejn National Nature Reserve. In 2004, a remarkable agreement between the reserve’s administration and the Czech Republic’s forestry department declared Doutnác a no-intervention zone. This means the natural development of the forest is left undisturbed, creating a unique opportunity to witness the raw beauty of a nascent primeval forest. The southern slopes of Doutnác bask in abundant sunlight, creating a dry, almost steppe-like environment. Here, the hardy pubescent oak thrives. The varied microclimates of Doutnác create a remarkable range of habitats. This diversity makes Doutnác an ideal location for observing natural forest development. The absence of human intervention allows nature to orchestrate its symphony of life, from seed to towering tree to decaying log, nurturing a diverse ecosystem. Doutnác is also home to a rare orchid, the pyramidal orchid, one of its few habitats in the Czech Republic.
