Ever wondered what secrets lie within these imposing walls? The Palácio das Indústrias stands before you a testament to São Paulo’s ambitious past. This magnificent building wasn’t always a museum.

Initially designed by Domiziano Rossi along with Ramos de Azevedo and Ricardo Severo it opened its doors in 1924. Its eclectic style reflects a blend of architectural influences. It was built to showcase the burgeoning industrial might of São Paulo. The first exhibition was held in 1917 even before its official opening.

For years the Palácio das Indústrias hosted industrial exhibitions highlighting the city’s economic growth. In 1947 it transformed into the Palácio Nove de Julho the legislative assembly. This name change commemorated the Constitutionalist Revolution a pivotal moment in Brazilian history.

The building’s history is more complex than one might imagine. In the 1970s the Palácio das Indústrias also housed the Public Security Secretariat. It even contained jail cells a rather unexpected addition to its portfolio.

The Palácio das Indústrias underwent a significant transformation in the 1990s. Architect Lina Bo Bardi led the restoration. It briefly served as City Hall before its current function. Since 2009 this remarkable building has been home to the Catavento Museum a science museum that brings science to life for visitors of all ages.

Each stone each window each architectural detail whispers of the city’s past. It whispers of exhibitions of political gatherings and even of imprisonment.
