Imagine the year 1857. The Austrian railway company completed Trieste’s first railway facilities. These facilities were part of the Vienna–Trieste railway. On July 27, 1857, Emperor Franz Joseph I officially opened the new terminal station. It was built on reclaimed land. This is the site of the present Trieste Centrale.

In 1878, a new more elegant Neo-Renaissance structure was inaugurated. Wilhelm von Flattich designed it. Its most notable features were a monumental hall and a majestic glass train hall. The hall later became known as the Royal Hall.

Trieste Centrale has witnessed significant historical events. In 1919, after World War I, the station came under the management of the FS. The original station was later renamed Trieste Centrale.

Stepping inside Trieste Centrale today, you will find a large passenger building. It has a ticket office and a central waiting area. There is also a chapel, bar, supermarket, bookshop, and pharmacy. A lounge is dedicated to high-speed train passengers.

Trieste Centrale has about six million passenger movements each year. High-speed trains connect Trieste to major Italian cities. You can travel to Rome, Florence, Bologna, Padua, and Venice. International connections are also available. You can travel to Vienna via Ljubljana.

The station building underwent a long restoration and renovation. The work was completed in 2007. Access from Via Miramare to the Royal Hall was fully restored.
