Storms once raged here. Cape Point stands as a dramatic landmark. It marks the southeastern tip of the Cape Peninsula. This is part of Table Mountain National Park.

Cape Point is about 60 kilometers from Cape Town. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The area boasts rich flora. It is one of the richest floral regions worldwide.

In 1488, Bartolomeu Dias first saw Cape Point. He was a Portuguese explorer. Dias sought a sea route to India. He initially named it the Cape of Storms. This was due to the dangerous coastline. Later, it was renamed Cape of Good Hope. This encouraged merchants to use the Cape Sea Route.

Cape Point is not the meeting point of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. Nor is it the southernmost tip of Africa. That title belongs to Cape Agulhas. It lies 170 kilometers to the southeast. The Cape of Good Hope is the southwestern point of Africa.

Wildlife thrives here. About 250 bird species call this place home. You might spot eland and Cape zebra. Watch out for the brazen baboons.

The old lighthouse at Cape Point was built in 1860. It stood 238 meters above sea level. Its height caused problems. Low clouds and fog often hid the light. In 1911, a Portuguese ocean liner wrecked. A new lighthouse was built. It stands 87 meters above sea level. Its light reaches 63 kilometers. It is the strongest on the South African coast.

You can reach the lighthouse by the Flying Dutchman funicular. Or, you can hike up the steep stairs. The views are breathtaking.

Many shipwrecks litter the Cape coast. Over 26 wrecks surround Cape Point. This is a testament to the Cape’s treacherous past.

The Cape Floral Region has about 1100 plant species. Fynbos thrives here. This includes ericas, proteas, and cone bushes.

The Two Oceans Restaurant offers stunning views. It was refurbished in 2012. Its design reflects the natural surroundings. You can also grab a quick bite at the Food Bar.

Three shops offer various souvenirs. You can find branded items and natural products. Nautical-themed trinkets are also available.

Enjoy many activities at Cape Point. Hike scenic trails or explore sandy beaches. Watch whales between June and October. Visit the tidal pools at Bordjiesrif and Buffels Bay.

Two self-catering accommodations are available. Olifantsbos Guest House sleeps twelve. These cottages sleep six people each.
