Kozakura Bridge. A name whispered in literary circles, a bridge painted a delicate sakura pink. Kozakura Bridge stands as the 121st bridge out of 140 spanning the Kanda River. Its unique pink hue sets it apart, matching the cherry blossoms that once graced the riverbanks. The origin of its name remains uncertain. However, some believe it’s linked to the Kanda River’s past as a renowned cherry blossom viewing spot. North of Kozakura Bridge, a shopping street stretches out. It bears the name Kozakura Shopping Street. This bustling area leads to the Uchikanda Ogawa Inspection Area, a subway depot. Beyond that, the street connects to Bakurocho. South of Kozakura Bridge lies Kirishitan Zaka, a sloping path that emerges near Edozakura Street. Kirishitan Zaka’s history reveals it was once the site of Shimanokami’s residence during the Edo period. Further down this path, one encounters the infamous Kirishitan Doka. This place served as a prison for suspected Christians and their sympathizers during the Keicho era (1620s-1640s). The name “Kirishitan Doka” comes from the nearby temple estate of Inoue Masashige, the magistrate in charge of the prison. Interestingly, the Italian Jesuit missionary, Giovanni Battista Sidotti, was imprisoned here in 1709 and later died in confinement in 1714. The Kirishitan Doka is not merely a historical footnote. It serves as a potent symbol in Japanese literature. Authors such as Natsume Soseki, Tayama Katai, and Ozaki Koyo have all referenced this place in their works, weaving tales of persecution and resilience. So, as you stand before the pink-hued Kozakura Bridge, remember. It’s not just a crossing over the Kanda River. It’s a gateway to a fascinating tapestry of history, literature, and the enduring spirit of those who once walked these very streets.
