Clang. Echoes of history resonate within these ancient walls. Welcome to Chapelle Saint-Thomas. It’s Strasbourg’s main Lutheran church. It’s often called the Protestant Cathedral.

The site was a place of worship as early as the sixth century. Bishop Adelochus established a grand church with a school in the ninth century. Sadly fire destroyed it, not once but twice. Construction of the building you see now started in 1196. It was finally completed in 1521 in late Gothic style.

In 1524, the Chapelle Saint-Thomas embraced the Protestant faith. Martin Bucer served as pastor here. This change defied the Catholic annexation of Alsace. The church remarkably maintained its Protestant identity.

Chapelle Saint-Thomas is known as a five-naved hall church. It is the oldest of its kind in the region. The interior stretches 65 meters long and 30 meters wide. The height reaches 22 meters. It extends to 30 meters under the late-Gothic cupola.

This Chapelle Saint-Thomas boasts internationally renowned organs. The 1741 Silbermann organ stands out. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart played it in 1778. Alfred Kern faithfully restored it in 1979. Louis Thiry even recorded Bach’s Art of Fugue on this very organ. The other organ is a 1905 Neo-Baroque masterpiece. Albert Schweitzer designed it.

Monuments inside the Chapelle Saint-Thomas span from 1130 to 1850. The sarcophagus of Bishop Adelochus is stunning. The Master of Eschau created it around 1130. The late-Baroque mausoleum of Marshal Maurice de Saxe is equally impressive. Jean-Baptiste Pigalle completed it in 1777.

The tombstone of Nikolaus Roeder von Tiersberg is quite unique. It realistically depicts his decaying corpse. Roeder also donated the Mount of Olives sculptures for Strasbourg Cathedral.

Look for the late-Gothic fresco of Saint Michael. After the Saint Christopher in Wissembourg, it is the largest of its kind in France.

Originally, medieval leaded windows graced the church. Only the rose window at the front remains intact. Protestant iconoclasts destroyed the saintly depictions. The choir windows now display a contemporary style.

Chapelle Saint-Thomas holds a special place in liturgical history. Friedrich Spitta tested new forms of church service here in 1888. The Akademische Kirchenchor also originated here.

The Chapelle Saint-Thomas is more than just a building. It is a testament to faith. It is a monument to art. It is a symbol of Strasbourg’s rich, complex past. Take a moment to appreciate the history and artistry around you. Let the echoes of the past resonate within you as you continue your journey.
