Atop a gentle hill, the Church of the Nativity stands watch over its neighborhood. It has witnessed the changing tides of Washington D.C. since 1901. The church’s story begins in 1900. It was established as part of the Archdiocese of Baltimore. The very first mass was held in 1901 within its sacred walls. The Church of the Nativity wasn’t built overnight. Generations of devoted Catholics, many of Irish and German descent, helped build the church and its surrounding buildings. This vibrant community thrived in the Brightwood neighborhood at Georgia Avenue NW and Peabody Street. The Church of the Nativity isn’t just a building. It represents a continuous thread of faith. From the early 1960s, the local Black Catholic community embraced the church. They preserved its rich heritage and fostered a spirit of charity. The church has even hosted saints within its walls. St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta, whose spiritual friend was former pastor Bishop William Curlin, once graced the Church of the Nativity. Thousands of children received their religious instruction and sacraments here. The affiliated school, sadly, closed its doors in 2007. But the Church of the Nativity continues its mission. It remains a sanctuary for daily prayer and a source of love and community outreach. The church actively serves those in need. It embodies the true mission of the Church. The Church of the Nativity stands at 6001 13th Street NW, Washington D.C., 20011. If you need to reach them, their phone number is 202-726-6262. Today, the Church of the Nativity continues to offer a variety of services to the community. Mass is celebrated at various times throughout the week. This includes Sunday services at 8:00 AM, 10:00 AM, and a Spanish language service at 1:00 PM. Weekday masses are held at noon on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Saturday has a vigil mass at 5:00 PM. The Church of the Nativity offers confession on Saturdays from 4:30 PM to 5:00 PM.
