Founded in 1836 as the Upper Canada Academy Victoria College stands proudly before you. Its story is one of evolution transformation and enduring legacy. Initially established by the Wesleyan Methodist Church Victoria College was granted a royal charter by King William IV a remarkable feat for a Nonconformist institution. This early charter paved the way for Victoria College to become a significant centre of learning.

For nearly five decades Victoria College operated as an independent university granting degrees. However its location in Cobourg proved challenging. Financial difficulties and geographical limitations led to a pivotal decision. In 1890 Victoria College federated with the University of Toronto. This was a turning point in the College’s existence. It moved to its current location in Toronto in 1892.

The move to Toronto marked a new chapter. The impressive Victoria College Building also known as Old Vic a beautiful example of Richardsonian Romanesque architecture rose on Queen’s Park Crescent. Designed by W G Storm the building stands as a testament to the era’s architectural style. Its construction completed shortly before Storm’s death.

Victoria College didn’t just welcome students. It fostered a vibrant community. Annesley Hall a National Historic Site of Canada and the first purpose-built women’s university residence in Canada opened its doors in 1903. Burwash Hall another prominent building a stunning Neo-Gothic structure with turrets gargoyles and battlements added to the College’s distinctive character. This was home to male residents but later adapted for co-ed living.

Beyond the buildings Victoria College boasts a rich intellectual heritage. It houses the E J Pratt Library a treasure trove of books and archives. It holds significant collections focused on Renaissance and Reformation studies including a remarkable collection of the works of Desiderius Erasmus. The library also plays host to the Centre for Reformation and Renaissance Studies. The College nurtured notable figures like Egerton Ryerson Lester B Pearson and Northrop Frye each leaving their mark on the institution and the world.

Even leisure was shaped by Victoria College’s history. Dancing was initially prohibited but eventually allowed thirty years later. Victoria College students established many traditions. The Bob Comedy Revue a student-produced and performed show dates back to 1872. King George V gifted Victoria College a silver cup and a royal standard enriching its collection. The College also proudly displays bronze plaques honouring students lost in both World Wars.

Victoria College’s journey from a Methodist academy to a federated college of the University of Toronto is an inspiring story. This place is more than brick and mortar. It is a living embodiment of scholarship community and enduring spirit. The legacy of Victoria College continues to shape the lives of students and contribute to the rich fabric of Toronto.
