It explores the theories and realities of war, strategic thinking in national security, the global security landscape, interagency decision-making, military strategy, and the complexities of joint and combined warfare. A unique strength of the National War College lies in its joint environment. Students and faculty represent all branches of the military and various civilian departments and agencies involved in national security. The National War College has called Roosevelt Hall home since its inception, except for a brief period during renovations in 1998-1999. In 1976, the college became part of the National Defense University, the nation’s premier center for joint professional military education. A notable event in the college’s history was the dedication of the west wing of Roosevelt Hall as the “General Colin L. Powell Wing” in 2016. The very walls of Roosevelt Hall, built between 1903 and 1907, have witnessed the evolution of strategic thought. Originally designed with a central rotunda and two wings, the west wing once housed the Army War College library, complete with towering cast-iron shelves.
