The Whitlam Library got its name from Gough Whitlam. He was a former Prime Minister and a local hero. Whitlam served as the Werriwa federal Labor MP beginning in 1952. Five years later, he made Cabramatta his home. His work secured significant federal funding for the library’s construction. So the community honored him by naming it after him.
Designed by the renowned architect Harry Seidler, the Whitlam Library opened its doors on October 20, 1975. The building quickly became an icon. A year later, the Governor of NSW, Sir Roden Cutler, officially inaugurated the library. The Whitlam Library even won an Australian award for its lighting design in 1976.
But the story doesn’t end there. On November 20, 1982, the library was officially renamed the Whitlam Library in honour of the former Prime Minister. Gough Whitlam himself attended the ceremony. He also launched Vance George’s book, “Fairfield: a history of the district” that day.
In 1991, major renovations added a first floor. Ralph Willis, the then treasurer, opened the extension on December 11, 1993. Today, the Whitlam Library serves a diverse population of 200,000 people. This community represents 130 countries and speaks over 75 languages. The library offers materials in many languages including Vietnamese, Chinese, and Khmer.

The Whitlam Library offers computer literacy and English conversation classes throughout the year.
