“Comoraz” whispers the wind through the ancient trees. This is Komořany. Right here before you stands a place steeped in history. A place where the echoes of centuries past still linger.
Komořany. Once a humble village. Now a cadastral subdivision of Prague 12. Its name meaning “royal or aristocratic property”. This land has borne witness to centuries of ownership. From the Vyšehrad Chapter in 1088 to the Oettingen-Wallerstein princes. Even an Albertain knight held sway here.
Imagine the villagers of old. Tending their land. Their lives intertwined with the rhythms of the Komořanský stream. The stream flows into the Vltava River. It bisects Komořany itself. This area is also bordered on the west by the Vltava’s right bank. Life was simple then. Yet rooted in the rich soil.
The 19th century brought change. Komořany shared governance with Točná. Only a chateau near the village of Točná is listed in Malý Otto’s dictionary of 1904. This shows the importance of the chateau and its long association with the area. It wasn’t until 1957 that Komořany gained independence.
But its independence was short-lived. In 1964 it merged with Modřany. They became a town. It was then annexed to Prague 4 in 1968. At the time it had 1107 residents. They lived in 133 homes. This area continued to grow. It added newer housing estates like U Vlečky.
Komořany also developed commercially. Even an abandoned shopping centre once stood here. It was later reconstructed in 2008. This shows the area’s economic development.
The Czech Hydrometeorological Institute now calls Komořany home. Its headquarters stands near the chateau. Nearby sits the Šabatka estate. It was renovated into an equestrian center. It’s home to the Epona Praha equestrian club. This combination of science and nature reflects the area’s evolving identity.
Komořansk’a street is the main artery. It connects the square where Kyslíková. Komořansk’a and Revoluce streets meet. This forms the natural center. Yet this square. the Sigma Modřany industrial park. and part of the housing estate all lie within Modřany’s cadastral area.
Today Komořany is a quiet residential area. But its past is woven into the fabric of this place. From its humble beginnings. it has evolved into a vibrant part of modern Prague. The remnants of its history are everywhere. You just have to look closely. The story of Komořany is a story of change. It’s a story of growth and resilience. It’s a story waiting to be explored. A story that continues to unfold even now.
