Birrong

Did the stars whisper the name “Birrong”? Here in this Sydney suburb, the Aboriginal word for “star” shines brightly. Birrong, a part of Canterbury-Bankstown, lies 22 kilometers southwest of Sydney’s bustling center. Birrong is nestled within the Southwestern Sydney region. It shares its postcode, 2143, with nearby Regents Park and Potts Hill. Imagine, back in 1835, Joseph Hyde Potts, one of Birrong’s earliest settlers, receiving a land grant. Potts Hill, a prominent landmark, bears his name. The arrival of the railway in 1928 spurred Birrong’s development. During the Great Depression, Birrong Park, once prone to flooding, was drained as part of relief efforts. This created a valuable community space. Later, in 1955, the post office opened, connecting Birrong with the wider world. Today, Birrong boasts numerous community facilities. These include six fields for soccer and rugby league, tennis courts, a sprawling natural park reserve, a bowls club, and a refreshing swimming pool.
