Picture this. You stand before the Gloriette del Cacciatore a remnant of Trieste’s rich past. Its elegant white limestone structure seems to whisper tales of a bygone era. This isn’t just any building. This Gloriette is a piece of a larger story a story of a forgotten pavilion.
The Gloriette del Cacciatore as it stands today is incomplete. It’s a deliberate design. Think of it as a staged ruin a theatrical backdrop. Three arches rest on six Doric columns smooth and baseless. The whole thing is framed beautifully. Its charm lies in its incompleteness. It was never meant to be whole.
Originally built in 1819 this wasn’t always the Gloriette you see today. Architectural drawings show it as a square kiosk topped with a lead dome. It was a cafe a meeting place a hub. This once-grand kiosk stood near the present-day Via Crispi. It stood above the filters of the Teresiano aqueduct hence its original name.
The mastermind behind this design was Count Giuseppe Huyn. A former Austrian artillery officer he was director of the Imperial Royal Factory Directorate. He was tasked by Governor Ignazio de Capuano. Huyn’s work wasn’t without criticism. His design was revolutionary at the time. Some found it too bold.
His Gloriette blended classical styles. It rejected the excesses of Baroque architecture. It favored essential forms. He combined simple shapes with ornate decorations. The original Gloriette boasted a central statue and two cherubs on either side.
The French architect Claude Nicolas Ledoux heavily influenced Huyn’s design. Ledoux emphasized the marriage of tradition and rationality. He streamlined various architectural styles. The Gloriette resembles Ledoux’s Parisian Barrieres tollbooths. This was a revolutionary style for its time.
Not everyone appreciated Huyn’s innovative design. Domenico Rossetti a local landowner who had a summer villa nearby called the structure “Greek-Roman-Barbarian-Idiot architecture”. Historian Caprin was equally harsh calling Huyn a brilliant artilleryman but a poor builder.
Remarkably a similar Gloriette was constructed in 1928 for an international exhibition. It was designed by Giuseppe Pagano. This Gloriette was eventually dismantled. Its facade however now sits here before you. It’s a testament to Huyn’s enduring vision even if his contemporaries didn’t see it then.
