Thirty Canada geese glided silently across Lake Kittamaqundi at dawn. Their shadows stretched long and elegant on the water’s surface. This is Lake Kittamaqundi in Columbia Maryland a man-made marvel. It’s a 27-acre reservoir nestled between Washington DC and Baltimore.

Lake Kittamaqundi wasn’t always here. The Rouse Company created it in 1966. It served a dual purpose. It was a recreational area and a cost-effective way to manage water runoff. The name itself is interesting. It’s said to mean “meeting place” in the Piscataway language. However some sources claim it refers to a 17th-century village 40 miles away named after its ruler. The true meaning remains a topic of debate.

Lake Kittamaqundi has seen its share of history. A tragic drowning in 1971 even inspired a book. A bell tower once stood proudly. It was built in 1967 from a wooden flagpole. It chimed every 15 minutes. Sadly wood rot forced its removal in 2010. Plans are underway to rebuild it for Columbia’s anniversary. The lake has also been the site of various summer festivals and Fourth of July fireworks displays adding to its vibrant history.

The lake’s ecosystem is rich and diverse. In winter waterfowl like common mergansers and hooded mergansers grace its waters. Beavers red foxes and river otters make their homes nearby. Warmer months bring butterflies dragonflies and turtles. Anglers can cast their lines hoping to catch bluegills crappies or largemouth bass.

Lake Kittamaqundi has faced environmental challenges. Sediment buildup reduced its depth. Dredging in 2010-2011 restored it. A diesel fuel spill in 2014 posed a threat. Thankfully Howard County quickly cleaned the spill. The lake’s beauty and its surrounding areas are now pristine.

Today Lake Kittamaqundi remains a beloved spot. People walk its one-mile paved trail. They enjoy the stunning views. It’s a testament to human ingenuity and nature’s enduring power. Lake Kittamaqundi is much more than just a lake. It’s a vibrant community hub a historical landmark and a beautiful place to connect with nature.
