“Thirteen names. Remember them,” I urge you as we stand on náměstí Na Farkáně. This square in Prague 5 holds a poignant history. It is a place where community spirit intertwines with the echoes of wartime tragedy.

Náměstí Na Farkáně is more than just a square. It is a local hub in Radlice. Radlice was a small village of the Smíchov district from 1873 to 1922. Then it became part of Greater Prague.

Look down at the memorial. It honors the victims of a devastating event. On February 14, 1945, bombs fell on Farkáň and old Radlice. This was during the Second World War. The first bombs of that day struck right here. Three houses were completely destroyed. Many others suffered heavy damage.

Among those names is Marie Valterová. She was a young woman. Marie served as a courier for the Věrný pes resistance group. Another member lived on Farkáně III. Marie worked there creating the group’s flag. Sadly, she died from injuries sustained after the May Uprising. Her story inspired the Czech Women in Resistance memorial. It stands in the Malvazinky cemetery.

Now turn your gaze upward. See that large linden tree. Citizens of Farkáň planted it. It was to celebrate the end of World War II. In March 2019, it was officially named a Freedom Tree. It is a protected tree. This tree symbolizes hope and resilience.

Náměstí Na Farkáně holds a special meaning for locals. It is a place for community gatherings. The Ekologická a humanitární služba občanů na Farkáně organizes events here. They celebrate spring. They light the Christmas tree. These events nurture the neighborhood spirit of this area.

As we leave náměstí Na Farkáně remember its layers. It is a place of remembrance. It is a symbol of community. It is a testament to the enduring human spirit.
