Ever wonder what a four-ton cake looks like? At Shopping Ibirapuera, such a marvel briefly existed. Shopping Ibirapuera sits in the vibrant Moema district of São Paulo. It opened its doors on August 6, 1976. Its name comes from its address on Avenida Ibirapuera. Shopping Ibirapuera was only the second shopping center to grace São Paulo. It followed the renowned Shopping Iguatemi. Imagine 3,000 workers toiling for a year and nine months. They transformed the former site of the Indiana textile factory into this retail haven. The grand opening drew a crowd of 15,000 eager shoppers. Among the initial 278 stores was a piece of history. The first C&A store in Latin America opened in Shopping Ibirapuera just days after the mall’s debut. Two years later, Shopping Ibirapuera celebrated its second anniversary with a unique spectacle. A four-ton cake, crafted by the Brunella confectionery, was devoured by 100,000 people in a mere two minutes. This sugary feat has never been repeated. Shopping Ibirapuera is unique. It is managed by its own shopkeepers. This allows for a diverse mix of lesser-known brands not typically found in other malls. The mall has also been a pioneer in hosting large-scale events. These include extravagant car raffles. From 1995 to 1997, Shopping Ibirapuera even held the Guinness World Record title for the largest shopping mall in Brazil. Outside, on Avenida Ibirapuera, a Pau-Brasil tree stands as a living testament to the mall’s history. Planted in 1985 by renowned landscape architect Burle Marx, it adds a touch of nature to the bustling urban setting. The mall’s location offers glimpses of São Paulo’s iconic landmarks. You can see Parque Ibirapuera and even spot planes flying low over the coconut trees from the parking lot. Shopping Ibirapuera boasts an eclectic architectural style. It blends materials like translucent glass, cement, ceramic, blocks, and iron. These were popular in the 1970s. Adorning the hallways and outdoor areas are sculptures by renowned artists. These include Roberto Vivas, Caciporé, Francisco Stockinger, Carlos Tenius, and Doely Moreno, all installed in 1976. Access is easy thanks to public transport. The Vereador José Diniz-Ibirapuera-Centro bus corridor and the Eucaliptos station on Metro Line 5-Lilás, opened in 2018, bring visitors right to the mall’s doorstep. After a 15-year hiatus, Shopping Ibirapuera welcomed back a cinema complex in 2019. The PlayArte network now operates six theaters with 798 seats. The complex occupies three floors, with two theaters on each level. Shopping Ibirapuera continues to evolve. It provides a dynamic blend of shopping, dining, and entertainment.
